El destacado dirigente político había nacido en la sureña ciudad de Tomé en septiembre de 1916, profesor primario, ingresó al Partido Comunsita el año 1932 y fue miembro del Comité Central de nuestra colectividad desde el año 1950 y secretario general desde 1958 hasta 1989.
Fue perseguido, relegado, prisionero político y exiliado por el gobierno de Gabriel González Videla y por la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet. esta última lo mantuvo detenido en isla Dawson, Ritoque y Tres Alamos hasta que fue liberado ante la gran presión internacional.
El compañero Corvalán participó hasta hace pocas semanas en las actividades de nuestro Partido, en las sesiones plenarias del Comité Central y el pasado aniversario el 6 de junio en el Teatro Normandie. En las últimas semanas estuvo internado en la clínica de la Universidad Católica donde fue dado de alta y permanecía en su casa, rodeado del cariño de los suyos.
El Partido Comunista de Chile repliega sus banderas y extendemos nuestra solidaridad a su esposa e hijas a quienes acompañamos en su profundo dolor. De acuerdo con la familia informaremos posteriormente el lugar del velatorio y el funeral de nuestro querido compañero.
